2010 Hand Applique Club - Elizabeth's Pride

Elizabeth's Pride Sample Blocks
Pause Stop Previous Next View full-sized photos

We are very fortunate to have Peggy Valitchka  join us again this year to run our hand appliqué club.  This year we’ll be working on Lori Smith’s Elizabeth’s Pride quilt!  This quilt has beautiful ‘folk’ floral blocks set on point with a center medallion-style block with a majestic eagle.  The eagle on the center medallion can easily be replaced with other choices and Peggy has even designed an alternative block for the club to use if you do not want the eagle.  The pattern shows the quilt done in wool but we’ll be doing ours in cottons.  Starting in March (and taking June and July off) we'll meet each month for a two-hour class for a total of 7 months.  We are offering two sessions each month for this class.  Fee for the entire year (7 Two-Hour Classes) is $70 with half down when you sign up and the other half paid by the first class.  If you are thinking about joining this club and have never hand appliquéd before, not to worry!  Peggy will bring you up to speed so don’t let that scare you away!  We have the center eagle medallion and several of the small blocks already done and in the shop as well as pictures on our website.  So, check out the samples and then join us for a wonderful experience in hand appliqué!

Quilt Sampler Block Club

We originally designed this club to be a hand-piecing club that would work on the Centennial Sampler quilt by Judie Rothermel.  But then the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Block book came out and we also fell in love with that quilt!  We also did not want to scare anyone away from joining this club because they did not want to hand piece.  So, we’ve re-designed the club to be the “Quilt Sampler Block Club”.

Sue Huettle will head up this club and walk us through many different techniques; hand piecing, template drafting, figuring out rotary cutting from template patterns/pieces, and hand appliqué.  You can of course machine piece these blocks too – some blocks will lend themselves more easily to hand-piecing though and Sue will talk about that in the club.  You’ll use a lot of some techniques and a little bit of others depending upon what blocks you want to make and what you like to do!

We will work out of both Judie Rothermel’s Centennial Sampler Quilt book and the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book.  If you’re not familiar with these books, they do NOT have any rotary cutting instructions in them.  They have the quilt block pictured and the templates and that’s it!  This is the way patterns were done ‘way back when’ before rotary cutters were invented (which really was not that long ago since rotary cutters were born in 1979)!

So, if you have either of these books and don’t know where/how to start, this is the club for you!  Sue will help you draft the blocks you’d like to make and then you can decide whether you want to piece them by hand or machine – it will be totally up to you!  The blocks are different sizes between the books so you’ll either want to work on a quilt exclusively from one of the books or you could work on two quilts at the same time; one from each book – now that’s ambitious!  You will work from your personal fabric collection and add as you need to along the way (or as a fabric inspires you to buy it!).  Just think of all the beautiful blocks your fabric collection would make!

This club will meet the last Wednesday of the month from 6-7:30pm starting in January and go through December.  The cost for the year (12 sessions) is $60 – this is quite a deal for everything you’re going to learn!  Following are the dates for the year.  So check your calendar and then check out the samples and books in the shop and get signed up for a wonderful experience!

Circle of Friends

There is no fee to join this group, just a desire to meet other ‘creative souls’ and have fun together!  Each month you receive a free pattern; there is show and tell, treats, and LOTS of fun!  So grab a friend or just come by yourself and join in the Circle of Friends.  Club meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6pm until whenever everyone is done visiting!  Feel free to bring handwork, knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, or punch needle to work on while we meet.

Final Fridays’ Open Sewing

Need time to finish a project or would you just like to get out and meet other quilters?  Then come join us at the shop the last Friday of each month during our Final Friday’s Sew In’!  Come in to the shop any time between 10am and 6pm for hours of uninterrupted quilting!!!  There is no cost to join us but space is limited so please call ahead of time to sign up.  Bring a bag lunch or order from one of the local eateries!

Jo’s Little Women

You are invited to step back in time and join us at an olde-fashioned gathering. Jo Morton, wonderful designer of fabric and patterns, has a club she offers exclusively to quilt shops. We started her new session (Part 9) in January, but it’s not too late to still get signed up!  We meet every other month on the second Wednesday or the second Saturday of the month.  Meeting every other month allows you time to enjoy creating Jo’s wonderful, exclusive club patterns. Club membership is $30 for the year and includes your own set of Jo’s exclusive club patterns, demos, and of course the company of other quilters who love Jo Morton patterns and fabrics. Two sessions are being offered. Stop in to see the beautiful quilts we’ll be creating and get signed up!

Remembering Adelia

Join the Remembering Adelia Club and take a journey into the past with a long-forgotten diary that recounts the beginning of the Civil War.  This is a 12-month club, which started back in October, but it’s not too late to join!  This club is based on six projects from Kathleen Tracy's book, Remembering Adelia. You'll enjoy a sentimental glimpse into the world of one ordinary woman living in the North during a troubling time in our nation's history—the Civil War.  Learn about women's lives during this turbulent time and the quilts they made to preserve their memories.  Explore our country's heritage and some of the quilting traditions of the 19th century.  We meet on the second Saturday of every other month so that you have plenty of time between meetings to finish your projects.  Our meeting is from 9-10am and after the meeting, you are welcome to stay and work on your project!  Club membership is $15 for the year (prorated for when you join!) and includes exclusive club demos as well as history about quilting during the civil war. Stop in to see the six beautiful projects we’ll be creating!  Book is required.
